The rolling waterfall coming over the edge of the couch seat completes the effect and gives you something that will definitely have your visitors talking—and impressed!

The Hammock: An Essential Piece of Outdoor Furniture

For most of us, summer time is all about kicking back and relaxing in our backyard (if you’re fortunate enough to have one). Sure, patio furniture can really turn your backyard into a nice little lounge area, but if you really want that perfect summertime oasis you need a good hammock. Now, I’m not talking about some sheet tied haphazardly between two tree branches, I’m talking about a serious hammock crafted specifically for extreme lounging.

The Parrot Bay Barbados Pillow Top Hammock is ideal for the serious relaxation connoisseur. That’s right friends–pillow top. I’ve tried out plenty of hammocks in my day, but I’ve always found them to be missing something. Now that I’ve seen this awesome hammock from Parrot Bay, I’m sure what was missing was cushiony pillow topped goodness.

The Parrot Bay Barbados Pillow Top Hammock is available at Amazon.com for $104.99 (margaritas not included)!

Flowetry in Motion

A bed that floats!Dutch architect Janjaap Ruijssenaars has created an amazing new bed that floats in the air. But this bed doesn’t use futuristic hovercraft technology or magic from a genie’s lamp to fly. Instead, it employs powerful magnets that keep it suspended about 16 inches off the ground. The most recent model can support up to 176 pounds, which means that at least for now the Floating Bed is a sleep experience for one person at time.

The technology took a reported estimated six years for Ruijssenaars to perfect in collaboration with Bakker Magnetics, but uses a simple scientific principle of opposing magnets. Powerful industrial-grade opposing magnets are built in to the surface below the bed and the floor underneath it, creating a force strong enough to defy gravity.

But it’s been four years since the Floating Bed premiered at the June 2006 Millionaire Fair in Belgium without it really catching on in the marketplace. This may be because the future isn’t cheap; the scale model alone costs US $153,000 and the full-size edition is expected to clock in at just over a cool US $1.5 million.

Forget the limitations and restrictive price—how cool to have your own floating bed! Not only would it make for an eye-popping showpiece at home, but it would keep creatures like New York City’s recent outbreak of bed bugs from crawling up in the night to disturb your sleep. I’ll wait a few more years, and hope that a great knock-off version might show up at IKEA.

Finally, Something to File About…

stack system

It takes a true genius to make filing interesting, and that pretty much sums up Alessandro Zambelli. Not to mention his Stack storage system.

Part of an exhibit in Milan Design Week, the Stack system boasts a hodgepodge of vintage filing cabinets, lockers, and cubbies encompassing the indifferent metal and almost-pretty colors reminiscent of days gone be. Even kids that have been stuffed in lockers will appreciate this one.

The Papasan Chair

papasan chairA Pier 1 staple since the chain opened its doors in 1962, the Papasan Chair is a unique piece furniture that’s easy to love — and fall asleep in. (Just look at that cat!)

Also called a dish chair or moon chair, this neat seating option is ideal for dorm rooms, bedrooms, living rooms, and even outdoor use. The base and bowl are typically made of rattan (a type of palm), however outdoor models are produced using iron.

To share the love, Pier 1 also carries a double Papasan Chair in an oblong shape.

Modern Furniture: Keeping a Low Profile

PadStyle.com turned us onto LTD Mod, a neat modern furniture company that makes nature look sleeker than ever before. We love the Delta “low profile” platform bed above, crafted out subtly distressed acacia mangium wood that would be easy to design an entire room around.
