When my boyfriend and I were brainstorming on new furniture options for our tiny, tiny living room, we couldn’t agree on much.

But one thing that was a unanimous YES!, was a bean bag chair. Two to be exact. We both had bean bag chairs in our rooms growing up, and remember them fondly. I had a bright yellow one and loved curling up like a cat and taking a snooze on it when I probably should have been doing my homework. He and his brother had two, and they became their Nintendo chairs: two amorphous blobs that molded to their shapes after hours of stationery game-play. Beanbag chairs may seem like a corny relic of the ’70s and ’80s, but with online stores like LoveSac.com and BeanbagChairOutlet.com, the once outdated design gets a new, cooler, lease on life.

I can’t wait to sink into my new bean bag chair with a book, and drift off to dreamland…

What’s that, you might ask? Butterfly chairs typically consist of a folding metal frame with a large cloth stretched over the frame in a butterfly-like shape.

When you have a butterfly chair, we guarantee it will be the first thing you’ll head to after a long day; it’s the perfect little nest to fall back into to rest, read, talk or watch television. And don’t forget, it can also be folded up so you can take it with you when you head to the beach for the summer. Or, if you prefer, you can keep it stored and bring it out whenever you need additional seating (though we suspect that once it’s out, it will stay out).

Our favorite butterfly chairs and covers right now are from Urban Outfitters; they are super comfortable and come in a cool range of prints to suit every home décor, including maroon flowers (pictured), a blue and white geometric print, and a black and green color sensation.

Looking for something spectacular for your living room? Tired of the usual upstanding upholstery? Check out some of these crazy new art couches, inspired by everything from stuffed animals to natural scenes to modernist functionality!

The Teddy Bear Couch

This couch is both plush and comfortable, and a sweet nod to the comfy stuffed animal characters for our youth. The only downside is that you won’t be able to pick up and play with these little guys yourself. A great place to read Winnie-The-Pooh aloud to someone in your life who’s young or just young at heart!

The Mountain Couch

Live in a house set against a dramatic mountain backdrop and interested in bringing a little of your outdoors indoors? Or do you perhaps reside in flatter lands and miss some of that Rocky Mountain High? This couch will remind you of purple mountains’ majesty every time you come home! The rolling waterfall coming over the edge of the couch seat completes the effect and gives you something that will definitely have your visitors talking—and impressed!

The Itty Bitty Reading Light Couch

This couch is pure post-modern functionality, perfect for reading or working on any quiet evening pastime like knitting, crossword puzzles, home manicures, or more! Check out the glare-free options for laptop-friendly options.

Sure, patio furniture can really turn your backyard into a nice little lounge area, but if you really want that perfect summertime oasis you need a good hammock. Now, I’m not talking about some sheet tied haphazardly between two tree branches, I’m talking about a serious hammock crafted specifically for extreme lounging.

The Parrot Bay Barbados Pillow Top Hammock is ideal for the serious relaxation connoisseur. That’s right friends–pillow top.
Dutch architect Janjaap Ruijssenaars has created an amazing new bed that floats in the air!

Dutch architect Janjaap Ruijssenaars has created an amazing new bed that floats in the air. But this bed doesn’t use futuristic hovercraft technology or magic from a genie’s lamp to fly. Instead, it employs powerful magnets that keep it suspended about 16 inches off the ground. The most recent model can support up to 176 pounds, which means that at least for now the Floating Bed is a sleep experience for one person at time.

The technology took a reported estimated six years for Ruijssenaars to perfect in collaboration with Bakker Magnetics, but uses a simple scientific principle of opposing magnets. Powerful industrial-grade opposing magnets are built in to the surface below the bed and the floor underneath it, creating a force strong enough to defy gravity.

But it’s been four years since the Floating Bed premiered at the June 2006 Millionaire Fair in Belgium without it really catching on in the marketplace. This may be because the future isn’t cheap; the scale model alone costs US $153,000 and the full-size edition is expected to clock in at just over a cool US $1.5 million.

Forget the limitations and restrictive price—how cool to have your own floating bed! Not only would it make for an eye-popping showpiece at home, but it would keep creatures like New York City’s recent outbreak of bed bugs from crawling up in the night to disturb your sleep. I’ll wait a few more years, and hope that a great knock-off version might show up at IKEA.

(Just look at that cat!)

Also called a dish chair or moon chair, this neat seating option is ideal for dorm rooms, bedrooms, living rooms, and even outdoor use. The base and bowl are typically made of rattan (a type of palm), however outdoor models are produced using iron.

To share the love, Pier 1 also carries a double Papasan Chair in an oblong shape.

We love this Hug Chair designed by Cate & Nelson, a find on mocoloco.com. This baby makes furniture shipping a breeze, as it can be unbuttoned to form a flat shape. Neat!
