In a perfect world, every room you encounter would be flooded with sunlight (or perhaps moonlight), offering a specular view of all things outdoors. Unfortunately, we live in the real world, which means some rooms are built without windows — particularly offices and bedrooms.
But before you quit your job and start browsing for new real estate, let’s explore some simple ways to decorate windowless spaces:
- Paint. Choose a light wall color to open your space and make up for all that absent sunshine.
- Lighting. For the brightest possible room, combine a center ceiling light with several lamps against the walls.
- Mirrors. Capitalize on the aforementioned light by reflecting it through one or more wall mirrors. These will also make your room feel bigger.
- Patterns. Opt for cheerful, bright fabrics to enliven your space. Patterns are great, but use them sparingly — otherwise your room will look cluttered.
Follow a similar light and bright color scheme for your furniture, and avoid crowding the space by choosing small pieces.
